We’ve just completed the commissioning and handover of a brand‑new Pump & Valve Specialties Ltd packaged GRP wastewater pump station for the Wairatahi development in Hastings. While the wet well and storage tanks form the backbone of the system, it’s the surrounding chambers and details that set this project apart.
Project Highlights
Wet Well
3,000ø × 6,977m deep, twin Flygt NP 3171 submersibles on auto‑coupling, with 150mm 316 stainless pipework in an integral valve chamber.
Emergency Storage
Two 3.0m × 11.5m horizontal tanks, 152m³ total capacity, each fitted with internal spray‑ball systems for automatic wash‑out after use.
Magflow Chamber
Purpose‑built 2,500ø × 1,852m deep chamber housing the 150mm meter and dismantling joint. Includes Class D lid, integral ladder, and drain stub piped back to the inlet manhole.
GRP Inlet Manhole
1,500ø × 5,620m deep, with two 250mm knife gate valves on the storage lines, operable from ground level.
Discharge Chamber
3,500ø × 4,757m deep with moulded GRP benching. Channels, a weir, and 3% falls formed into the floor, with baffles steering three separate inlets (DN500 with dropper, DN400, DN200) into a single DN800 GRP discharge.
Why the Details Matter
The discharge chamber is a standout feature. Traditionally, benching is hand‑formed in concrete on site, often by whoever is available that day. That variability can determine whether solids move through a chamber or settle in it. By moulding the benching in GRP within a controlled factory environment, we achieved repeatability, corrosion resistance, and the same 100‑year design life as the rest of the package.
