Choosing the Right Pump or Pumps for Your Application - Pump & Valve Specialties Ltd

How do I know if a pump is the right size for my application?

It’s a question we hear all the time — and it’s for good reason.

If your pump’s too small, it’ll constantly be playing catch-up. Too big? You’re most likely wasting energy, adding unnecessary wear & tear, and spending a lot more than you need to.

How do you know if the pump you’ve got is actually right for your setup?🔎

Here are a few things we look at:

Flow rate – Are you getting enough product through, when you need it?
Pressure/head – Can the pump overcome the lift and friction in your system?
System curve – Your pump needs to match your system, not just be “close enough”
NPSH – If it’s too low, you risk cavitation (and yes, this is as rough as it sounds)
Duty cycle – A pump that runs 24/7 has very different needs from one that runs a couple of times a week.
Product characteristics – Temperature, viscosity, and specific gravity (SG) of what you’re pumping all play a big role in pump selection. Thick or sticky products need a very different setup from thin, cold liquids.

If your pump’s noisy, running hot, breaking down, or just not performing like it should — it actually might not be sized right for your application.

We’ve seen it all, and we actually enjoy digging into these kinds of problems. Whether it’s a quick sizing check or a full system rethink, we’re happy to help.
